Ravenglass was originally the site of the Roman fort Glannoventa (www.roman-britain.org) from around 79AD. Today all that survives is the Roman Bath House just a few minutes walk from the Bay Horse. This is also where the Hadrian’s Cycleway begins which is a new 174 mile route (route 72) which runs across northern England between Ravenglass and South Shields, Tyne and Wear, "the Roman way". Start your journey at Ravenglass and stay with us at the Bay Horse.
